Monica Nuñez, the director of MANA de Albuquerque’s Hermanitas program, was recently recognized on KOB 4’s Pay It 4ward for her unwavering commitment to mentoring young Latina students.
Juan Larrañaga, a parent of an Hermanita, nominated Nuñez for the honor. He praised her as a selfless leader who pours her time and energy into empowering the next generation. “Caring and giving, selfless. She just gives all of her time and energy. She’s a giver,” said Larrañaga in the KOB feature.
Since entering into the Hermanitas Director role for the MANA de Albuquerque chapter in 2019, Nuñez has provided many Latina middle school and high school students with mentorship, educational opportunities, and exposure to inspiring leaders in the Albuquerque community. The Hermanitas program not only supports young women in their academic and personal growth, but also encourages them to give back—creating a cycle of mentorship and empowerment.
Nuñez brings a wealth of experience to her work in education outside of her involvement with MANA de Albuquerque. Currently managing the teacher evaluation system at the State of New Mexico Public Education Department, she has a long history in education, previously serving as Albuquerque Public Schools’ Accountability Support Coordinator. She firmly believes that it takes a family to educate a child and strives to create an inclusive atmosphere where families are actively involved in workshops, conversations, and relationships that shape young lives.
Originally from San Bernardino, CA, Nuñez earned her Master of Education from the University of Arkansas and her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California - San Bernardino. As a proud mother of two adult children, Sophia and Michael, she understands firsthand the powerful role that community-based organizations play in shaping young people’s futures.
Nuñez’s recognition on Pay It 4ward highlights the profound impact she has on Albuquerque’s Latina youth. MANA de Albuquerque is proud to celebrate her dedication and the positive impact she continues to make in the lives of so many young women in New Mexico.
